40 National  and International volunteers participated in  Filed photography on street and working children

Venue: Bangalore City India

Date :8th January 2012

meeting Point :scead office Bangalore India

Project Director : Siju Thomas Daniel

Today was another out of the world, real experience. Excitement to go
on a field from the last few days turned out to be worth waiting for.
Around 40 SCEAD FOUNDATION volunteers, students from various colleges
and our international volunteers met up at the office in morning. We
were split into groups and were allotted different areas such as
Shivajinagar, K R market, Gandhi Bazar, and in and around areas of the
office. Our task for the day was to take photos of working children in
these busy hubs of Bangalore. Taking pictures only was not what we
were asked to do,  but in turn find out from these children, the
reasons for not attending schools and bring this to the notice of the
Anti Child labour Authorities . It was surely a very busy day the
teams as we got to walk in the gullies and find out many, many such
children. What we learnt today is that, not all children are lucky to
get education like us and sadly, also not being recognized by the
authorities in charge. our aim is to bring this to the notice of the
authorities about these sensitive children issues and make sure they
take this matter seriously.

I am a student of Christ University pursuing Bachelors in Business Management. I’ve always had a soft corner for children. This is the best opportunity I could get to contribute to their development.

It was the first day for me as a part of SCEAD Foundation team and was asked to click several pictures of children working in the market areas and slums in Bangalore. We went to different places around Wilson Garden, Someshwaranagar, etc.  We went to the slum area because it was difficult to find working children in the city.

We saw so many children, some sitting with their parents in the verandah, some playing games in groups. It was quite touching that as soon as we arrived all of them gathered us and greeted us in their own special way (we couldn’t understand their language but could feel that they were happy to see us).  We took out our cameras to capture those beautiful moments. We played with them. More and more children came out being fascinated by the cameras and everyone was excited.

We went inside and to our surprise we saw three to four children playing in the garbage. It was a big area between two buildings which were under construction. When we went closer we saw that they were actually segregating the waste and not playing. That was quite shocking. I tried to ask them why they are doing it and was quite inquisitive to know about them more. But maybe it was our bad luck that we couldn’t have conversation because of inconvenience in understanding each other’s language.

We then left to search for more children as the parents started revolting because we were strangers and were trying to talk to their children and capturing their pictures. Most of the time when I travel I’m lost daydreaming about something or the other. But today it was quite different. I was conscious and aware about everyone whom I saw outside my window. Sadly, I was two children carrying big buckets of water in their heads. I went to them and asked them where they were taking it. They said they earn money for the work they do. They were small children of 10years each. They were paid Rs 500 per month for that work. I asked them about their family. They said that they live in a slum nearby. One of them said that his dad drives auto and his mom is dead. The other one said that his mother is a servant and his dad doesn’t do any work. I felt really sad listening to them. I couldn’t talk much and moved on.

These little incidents struck my heart and I feel disappointed thinking about their condition. I feel really lucky to have everything I ever wanted. My parents gave me whatever I asked for. I got the opportunity to experience luxuries in life, from AC rooms, TVs, Computers to the latest Cell phones. Wore clothes of the best brands and ate all the delicious dishes in 5 star hotels. I wonder how my life would be without all these. It’s actually very difficult to survive in such conditions where it’s difficult to even get a meal for a day (forget about luxuries).

I’ve always heard about the condition of poor people but never came across them so closely. I would like to thank SCEAD Foundation for helping me understand it and I would definitely love to work for these young children. Children, in spite of going to schools are doing these petty odd jobs just to earn their daily bread. I would appreciate the work being done by this organization to improve these children’s lifestyles and help to educate them and lead a healthy life ahead.

Incredible India! A country of big contrasts. Very rich people, who have everything (begining with power and status in society and finishing with expensive clothes, jewelers, cars..). On the other side there are very poor people who have nothing. They have to work hard every day for receiving food and money for their families...

There are a lot of volunteers  who take care of underprivileged people. It is a big system of different organizations from all over the whole world. They provide a lot of things, which are needed by this people. One of them – Scead foundation usually helps children in government schools. This organization provides books, stationeries, blankets and other useful things. And now I am a part of this system...]

I was working in Government Tamil and Kannada Primary School. All the equipment for classrooms, sports, library, books etc. are provided by the Principal and the teachers who are really hard working to realize all that. The children are very active. They even cannot sit quit for a long time. Everything is very interesting for them, even my laptop. There are full of energy like small batteries).

I taught them one kind of ballrooms dance – valts. This dance was strange for them, because of in India according to native tradition woman and man cannot dance together, like pair They do this separate. But it was quite good. After every single class children came to me and asked: “Teacher, one more, please!” or “Tomorrow, tomorrow will u come teacher?”. We had a lot of fun. I was very happy to see the bright light in their eyes. Everyone can feel this, you just have to open your heart.

Hi! My name is Olena Iakubiak. I arrived in India for the first time and I have many impressions about the country and about my internship because India a country of contrasts. I had an internship at the school for children with low income families. I taught them to paint, play chess, to try to be a rugby player.

This incredible an experience for me to communicate with these kids! They are all sincere, pleasant, interesting, capable, they have incredible potential to learn. Each child is special. I was going through their emotions with them. I really like this!
This is one of the most intensive stages of gaining experience. Internships can immerse themselves in new cultures and get to know themselves, develop personal qualities

My name is Michaela, I’m from Czech Republic and I came to help in SCEAD foundation for 2 months. I’m passionate about music, sports, I like to work with children and I want to help to change today’s world by having positive impact everywhere I go. That’s why I decided to go for this internship right away.
It’s been 4 days since I started to teach in Patel Government School in Bangalore INDIA . In my music and dance class I teach 20 girls, 8 to 15 years old, and I have to say, that I was surprised how talented my students are. They learn very quickly and so far we’ve done 4 English songs such as My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean or If You’re Happy Clap Your Hands.

In my music class we do rhythm exercises, use variety of vocal techniques, and practice the proper pronunciation of the songs’ lyrics.

In the dance class my students learn different dance styles and choreographies from hip hop, through country dances to classical dances such as waltz. At the end of my stay in this school we’ll prepare a show at which the girls can present their new skills.

So far I loved my experience in this school. It’s been a real pleasure to teach these girls who are thrilled to learn, looking at you with their cute faces and eyes full of happiness and love.

My name is Vladimir Soukup I came to SCEAD foundation from Czech Republic where I am studying international trade at University of Economics in Prague. Having a 3 years experience with leadership and management I was given a very important job description. My task was to help the founder clarify and set a clear mission for the organization so that the activities are focused and an increased impact is achieved in that particular area. Based on this mission the way to do it would be designed and concrete activities put in place.

To create this output was a very challenging goal we set. After many meetings that sometimes lasted to late at night we managed to make a progress. We were asking our selves WHY does the organization exist? What is its mission. I am more than happy that this is now clear. The mission of the organization is to: "STOP the child labour!" This may seam like an easy thing to decide but it is actually very important and not that easy at all. The mission defines not only the activities that the organization is going to do but also, and that is very important, activities that the organization is NOT going to do. SCEAD as every organization has limited resources be it financial or human and thus it has to prioritize which activities are the most important. So far SCEAD foundation was doing activities such as fighting agains HIV AIDS, Child labour, environmental problems, solving issues of orphans and others.  All these activities are all very beneficial and striving to make the world a better place but at the same time the scope of activities is way to large to create a large scale impact in any of the areas.

That is why we are now so proud that with the mission set, the priorities of the foundation are going to be a way more focused. Always asking ourselves "how does this particular activity help to stop the child labour?" and not doing anything else than that. The key activities that are our focus now is to educate as many parents as possible and motivate them to send their kids to school. We'll do this especially in the villages where the issue is the most burning. The next focus area we are about to do is to support the children's parents with equipment for their kids so that all of them can afford to send their kids to school. But before we are able to provide financial support on a large scale we must put in place a powerful fundraising strategy. We'll create specific products for particular segments of companies and have a clear partners structure of the foundation.

I strongly believe that the three priorities that we set (education of parents, providing equipment and fundraising) are so power that they will take the foundation to another level. And thus even though my internship is about to end soon I am more than confident that Daniel as the leader of the foundation has all the tools to make the change happen!
