12to12 to End Child Labour - The Community Portal

With 75% of the population living in poverty, the province of Azua in the Dominican Republic is a top priority for national social policy. It produces some two thirds of the country’s tomatoes. While the school year runs from September to June, planting takes place in October and November and the harvest in January and February. During those months school attendance in Azua would drop by up to 50% as children went to work in the fields. Many of them, of primary school age, would often start a nine hour working day at five in the morning.

Sonia Morales Soberón, member of the Ministry of Labour’s National Committee for the prevention and elimination of child labour (CPETI), explains the work realized by this Committee and the role of the trade unions affiliated to the Peruvian Central Union of Workers (CUT).
