The Times of India - NEW DELHI: Within days of Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council (NAC) recommending that the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act be amended in sync with the Right to Education (RTE) Act - promising free and compulsory education for children aged between 6 and 14 years - the labour ministry will hold a meeting with HRD officials on Wednesday.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has ordered a survey of child labour in five districts of Uttar Pradesh, where a large number of children are employed in carpet industry and other labour intensive units. The survey will include data on the number of children rescued and action taken for their rehabilitation.

On November 14, when the nation celebrates the birth anniversary of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as Children's Day, there will be many kids all over the country working to earn a living. These are the children who work to stay alive despite the Child Labour (prohibition and regulation) Act-1986 forbidding the use of children as workers.

A child labour free zone is a place where no child labour exists and where all children go to school. This could be a village or a plantation. In a child labour free zone everyone is convinced that children belong in school and not in the workplace. All parties – local organisations, trade unions, governments, employers, teachers, parents and children – cooperate to completely eliminate child labour and get all children into school.
