On 16 May 2012, the 26th IUF World Congress hosted a side event organised by the International Partnership for Cooperation on Child Labour in Agriculture to discuss the role of trade unions in eliminating child labour in agriculture. More than 40 participants from agricultural trade unions, ILO staff, and NGOs attended the side event.
The side event was chaired by Ms. Sue Longley, Agriculture coordinator of IUF and IUF focal point for the Partnership and featured a presentation on the Partnership by Ms. Paola Termine, ILO-IPEC technical specialist on child labour in agriculture and Secretariat for the Partnership. A very interesting and rich discussion on various aspects related to child labour in agriculture, and the exchange of good practices for strengthening the engagement of agricultural trade unions in eliminating child labour in agriculture, promoting decent work for youth, and breaking the cycle of rural poverty followed.
During this 26th World Congress, the IUF Resolution Number 19:Child labour in agriculture was unanimously adopted which specifically calls on the IUF to lobby the ILO and other relevant UN agencies to increase commitment to and action on elimination of child labour in agriculture.
