Accelerating action against child labour

Report of the Director-General, International Labour Conference, 99th session, 2010
May 2010 - In its quadrennial Global Report on child labour, the ILO said that the global number of child labourers had declined from 222 million to 215 million, or 3 per cent, over the period 2004 to 2008, representing a “slowing down of the global pace of reduction.” The report also expressed concern that the global economic crisis could “further brake” progress toward the goal of eliminating the worst forms of child labour by 2016.

May 2010 - An interagency report by the Understanding Childrens Work programme (ILO, the World Bank and UNICEF) calls for child labour to be placed at the forefront of national development agendas and presents a range of evidence indicating that child labour constitutes an important impediment to national development.

Global child labour developments: Measuring trends from 2004 to 2008

May 2010 - The latest trend report provides new global and regional estimates on child labour for the year 2008 and compares them with the previous 2004 estimates. It also explains in detail the underlying estimation methodologies and gives an overview of the datasets used. The report shows that globally child labour continues to decline, albeit at a lower rate. Key findings are presented according to: form of children's work, age group, sex, region, sector of activity and status in employment.

Action against child labour 2008-2009: IPEC Progress and Future Priorities

March 2010 - This report is the implementation report of the ILO's International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) covering the biennium 2008-09. It provides information about the Programme's activities worldwide during this period. The report also reflects upon IPEC's responses to implications of the global economic crisis on the child labour and highlights the lessons learned by IPEC after a decade of action against child trafficking.
